The Kamalla Rose Kaur Column
Without True Understanding, We Stray In Lies
Kamalla Rose Kaur Sat Jul 07

I live in a country full of drugged and depressed people
glued to the tube,
blithely unaware that they aren't getting the real News.
I wonder what will happen
if "they" ever
call in
all credit card debts.
Pay up, right now.
I live in a country full of debtors and shoppers.
People here do not save,
they consume.

Scientists say we have less than 20 years left
to save this planet from irreparable ecological damage.
But I live in a country that doesn't admit
that global warming is happening.
The Northern Atlantic no longer has any cod in it,
salmon are going away too,
and eagles and elephant and tigers and lions;
where and how are they to live on Earth?

I live in a country where people never imagine
that the knock on the door might happen
and agents of evil might burst in
and kill.
Yet I live in a country where children
bring guns to school and go on murder sprees.
I live in a country under tremendous strain of change,
a country that hasn't yet given up the toxic idea
that we have been chosen to rule the World.

My Guru, my friend says:

"Abandoning the gracious Giver, we addict ourselves to other delights and we never succeed. Say Nanak, without the Name, we lose all honor."
