I have been perusing with
interest One Hundred Questions by Professor Satbir Singh being rendered
in English by Dr. Hakam Singh on Sikhe.com (currently every Saturday).
Satbir ji selected these questions out of nearly a thousand of
them submitted by Sikh youth attending training camps of the All
India Sikh Students' Federation in India. He chose these particular
ones to incorporate the most salient features of the Sikh faith
and Sikh history.
The Satbir Answers not only represent his deep study of Sikhism
but also to reflect popular beliefs among the religious leadership
of the Sikhs. Satbir Singh was the backbone of the Dharam Parchar
Committee of the Shiromani Gurdwara Prabhandak Committee for many
years. Further, he sought input from his trusted colleagues before
publishing his book on the question.
Dr. Hakam Singh should be commended for his efforts, as it is not
easy to render the theological terminology into English without
losing the beauty of the Punjabi language. He is clearly successfully
in staying very close to what the author meant from each response
and still make it very engaging reading.
I should recognize the earlier efforts of Sardar Jasbir Singh of
North Carolina in translating a significant portion of the same
book. He used his translations at the Loh Garh Retreat for Sikh
youth and also made them available for every one's use through the
Khalsa net Web site.
Dr. (Bhai) Harbans Lal is a distinguished
Pharmacologist and a recognised scholar of Sikhism. Professor Lal
has been published in all the major Sikh journals. His present interests
lie in promoting Sikh Studies in North America.
