Conference on Diaspora issues begins today

Sikhe.com Fri May 25

CANADA, Waterloo: A Conference entitled "Sikhs In the Diaspora: New Century, New Challenges" begins this afternoon on the University of Waterloo campus in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada.

A dozen men and women - scholars and members of the Sikh community from Canada, the United States and Britain - have gathered here for three days to look at a variety of issues of interest to the global Sikh community today.

Each paper will be made available shortly on Sikhe.com as part of a forum geared to each topic separately, to enable the cyber-sangat to enter into a discussion over its contents with its author. The papers, in their final form, will be published in hard copy in a single volume and made available to the public in September, 2001.....Go to topics to be discussed.

Old age is not a disease

T. Sher Singh Thu May 24

We, as human beings, claim superiority in the animal kingdom and cite human sociability and the ability to achieve progress as the bases.

There is at least one more significant distinction, but I am not sure if it is indicative of any superiority. We are sanctimonious. It is one trait that sets us completely apart from the rest of creation.......Go to Article.

Dr T. Sher Singh is a lawyer, newspaper columnist and a TV/Radio commentator on current affairs, based in Canada.

Winston Smiths wanted
Wed May 23

Well said ('1984 Revisited', May 22). But alas, we have become a community of "banias" so to expect our so-called scholars to exhibit any courage is perhaps unfair to them.

They are just like the rest of us committed to no more than making a living.

The Orwellian title is quite apt: the party slogan in the book 1984 was something to the effect that he who controls the past controls the future; he who controls the present, controls the past. Big brother (GOI) controls the present, continues to sedate us with lies and we as a community suffer a collective loss of memory. One can only hope there are Winston Smiths amongst us to awaken us.

After going through these books we come to realize the inadequacy of the translations of the Guru Granth Sahib. No translation does justice to the original text.....Go To Article.

Lest we forget
Wed May 23

Thanks for reminding every one about 1984 ('1984 Revisited', May 22). We have a class every year at Lohgarh to discuss this issue. Most children attending camp were not even born then.

Last year some campers researched the event and wrote papers. Then one of them presented the paper at the last days program that is held for the parents and other guests. The girl who presented the paper did a great job, she had really involved herself with the subject.

It is so important to talk about these events lest we forget our history.

Sikh-Hindu leader sees nothing to fuss about
Sikhe.com Thu May 24

AFGHANISTAN, Kabul - Even as media coverage of the Taliban's identification of non-Muslims decree continued unabated, Inder Singh, a leader of Kabul's Sikh and Hindu community, clarified that the edict makes no mention of how Hindu women must dress.

Further, Inder Singh endorsed the Taliban idea of small badges to be worn by non-Muslims on the inner sides of their coats to distinguish them from Muslims. Mr. Singh echoed the official explanation that identification would save Hindus from harassment by Taliban religious police who's task it is to enforce their Islamic interpretation on the nation’s Muslims.

Around 500 Hindus remain in Afghanistan, compared with the 2,000-strong Sikh community. Most Hindus left in the mid- 90s, before the Taliban arrived. Most of those remaining live in Kabul.
