Kamalla Rose Kaur's article
('Sharing Khalsa Vows', Jan 21) was very painful, especially today
when we celebrated Guru Gobind Singh Ji's Guru Prabh.
How can you say, "I just wish to share the Khalsa vows"
and then turn around and say "I couldn't care less if people
grow their hair?" The Khalsa was formed by Guru Gobind Singh
Ji who said that the Khalsa should uphold the five 'K's - of which
kaes (hair) is one of them. You can't share the Khalsa vows
if you just omit one, which you have not resolved in your heart
yet.
I understand that there are Sikhs who wear the Khalsa uniform and
don't follow the Khalsa ways. That is most troubling. But that is
not the result of wearing the Khalsa uniform, that is the frailty
of human nature. There are people who don't wear the Khalsa uniform
and do equally bad things. And what about the majority who do wear
the Khalsa uniform and are good Sikhs?
Having kaes is not the only vow we Sikhs must take, but
it is necessary. After all, Guru Gobind Singh Ji wore the Khalsa
uniform and so did all the previous Gurus. There is something divine
in having kaes.
