I assure you ('Painful,
especially the timing', Jan 22) that I did clearly say ('Sharing
Khalsa Vows', Jan 21) that Sikhs should wear the full Khalsa
uniform. I didn't say that I didn't care if Sikhs grow or cut our
hair. I said I do not care if people from my own culture grow their
hair or not. Why would I?
I am not trying to convert people to Sikhi. I will not ask Christians,
Buddhists, Humanists, intellectual Atheists and Agnostics, or anyone
else from my culture to covert and grow their hair like Sikhs. I
do not approve of proselytizing.
People from my culture and from everywhere else on this sad planet
can be inspired and live up to the Khalsa vows if they wish to,
without converting to Sikhi. The vows are beautiful and they work
with people from all cultures and traditions. The Khalsa vows are
noble and universal.
Sikhi is a World religion and people from all faiths can and will
find teachings that help them be better people and more dedicated
to their own path. I know I am inspired by the teachings of all
the great traditions.
Now beyond this, I have no doubt that many Westerners will convert
to Sikhi - many already have. Again I personally feel Sikhs should
maintain all 5Ks, but only Sikhs. Jews are not required to grow
their hair just because they are inspired to hold the same standards
as True Sikhs.
