Turbans are articles of faith, not politics
Tia Goss Singh (Sawhney) / Chicago Tribune Wed Oct 03

USA, Evanston -- The turban is not an Islamic invention. The Old Testament is littered with references to the holy attributes of the turban (see Leviticus, Exodus, Isaiah, Ezekiel and Zechariah). Although wearing one is not part of today's Jewish and Christian culture, Jews and Christians can rightfully claim the turban as part of their religious heritage.

By wearing their turbans, Sikhs (mostly), Moslems and Hindus are stating that they are members of a faith community; they are not wearing their turbans to state that they support terrorism.

A turban is a Sikh's uniform. For many Sikh men, and some women, a turban is as essential to their personal dress uniform as underpants and trousers. The Sikh's 10th guru decreed that Sikhs should wear a turban so that they cannot hide from their affirmative duty to defend injustice--injustice against people of any faith.....Go to Article.

USA, Seattle -- Hearing about Muslims, and people mistaken for Muslims, being targeted and attacked in the wake of the Sept. 11 attacks made me think of how I would feel if I were still a practicing Muslim. This is what drove me to wear my Islamic garb for three days in Seattle (and surrounding areas) as well as a couple of days in Vancouver, B.C. I also crossed the border with my scarf on -- I took a train to Vancouver and flew back.....Go to Article.

Charge that U.S. policy is 'soaked in blood' sparks furor in Canada
Miami Herald Wed Oct 03

"This new war against terrorism that's being launched, it's very old. And it's a very old fight of the West against the rest. Consider the language which is being used to mobilize people: calling the perpetrators evil doers, irrational, calling them the forces of darkness, uncivilized, intent on destroying civilization, intent on destroying democracy. They hate freedoms, we are told"- from the speech of Sunera Thobani, a university professor and former president of the National Action Committee on the Status of Women.....Go to Article.

USA, Waurika -- "None of us wear turbans," she said.
Nor does the menu - chicken fried steaks and other standard fare - show any foreign ethnic influence. Until Sept. 11, if anyone was simmering over the Punjabi heritage of the Singhs and Toor, they apparently were keeping it to themselves. But after Sept. 11, the hatred seems to have boiled.....Go to Article.

USA, Greensboro -- Then there's the strangers who approached Singh in a Greensboro grocery. The men wanted to make sure people were not threatening Singh because of the way he looks, with his turban and long beard.

"That struck me," said Singh, 42, a computer software engineer who coaches field hockey at Greensboro Day School. "These are people I'm never probably going to meet again ... there have been moments in the past few weeks when I have been drawn to tears.".....Go to Article.

Note: For Sikh women to have the last name 'Kaur' and Sikh men, 'Singh', is an article of faith. (Please refer to the statement in the article: To show equality, many men take "Singh" as a middle or last name and women take "Kaur").
